Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary is situated near Kollur in Udupi district. This sanctuary is spread over an area of around 247sq.km. This wildlife sanctuary shares its north-western boundary with the Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary. Mookambika wildlife sanctuary is situated at a distance of about 125km from Mangalore. It falls under the core zone of 114sq.km, buffer zone of 90sq.km and tourism zone of 43 sq. Km. The forest is endowed with thick evergreen and moist deciduous trees of the Western Ghats. Some of the eminent tree species are found in this region including trees like Dipterocarpus Indicus, Calophyllum Tomentosum and Hopea Parviflora. A rare species of the climber; Coscinium Fenestratum is found here. The sanctuary is home to various species of animals like the Sambar Chital, Wild Pig, Barking Deer, Tiger, Leopard, Gaur, Otter and many more.

Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary is near to the Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary which is highly recommended tourist spot. Touristss can spot different species of birds such as the Yellow Bulbul, the Malabar Grey Hornbill and the Scarlet Minivet.

Tourists also make it a point to visit the goddess Mookambika Temple that is located near to the wildlife sanctuary. This sanctuary is known to be an extended part of the Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. The best time to visit Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary is from November to March. During this time you can thoroughly enjoy the trekking and seeing different types of birds and animals.

Tourists can plan their day out in complete 2 treks. One trek can be focused on butterflies. This is also known to be an Educational Tourist spot for students as they can spend their time in learning about endless colourful species of the forest. This Sanctuary supports numerous species of butterflies and plant variants in diversity. If you are a snake lover there is a separate trek available for snake sighting where in the guides will introduce you to different species of snakes and give you knowledge about their behaviour and lifestyle. If you are lucky enough you will definitely spot the famous ornate flying snake; which lives on trees. There is also a special bird trail.

This Sanctuary is full of numerous reptiles, birds and butterflies. The Arshinagundi Falls is said to be the place where you can spot the Black Headed Oriole, the Malabar Trogon, the Pompadour Green Pigeon, the Malabar Trogon, the lovely pair of Painted Bush and many more amongst the noted ones. Calophyllum Tomentosum, Machilus Macrantha and Elaeocarpus are the important species of medicinal plants you will find in the sanctuary. Calamus Thwaitesii is a type of cane which grows in lowe altitudes and grows to be of 10mtrs in height can be also found here.
