Barkana Falls near Udupi
Barkana Falls is located in Agumbe in Shimoga district of Karnataka. Barkana falls is popular spot for sightseeing and picnic. The bamboo trees in the trekking path is an extremely pleasant experience. The water enthusiastically gushing down from the mighty 850 feet is worth watching sight.
There is Bus service from Thirthahalli and Agumbe towards Shringere which stops at Barkana road and one has to walk the remaining miles to reach the place. Off road bikes are opted to reach the location. Yet trekking is preferred by maximum people because of the lush green meadows on the way. Since this is a known falls and one of the most popular falls in Karnataka there are several hotels and other lodging facilities near the falls. However, 6 kms around the falls is surrounded by deep forest and you have to walk all the way long to reach the falls. The pathway is not so clear, with big twigs blocking your way all through the jungle. The forest is human friendly however during rainy season the whole trekking path will be carpeted with blood sucking leeches and can really give a hell ride for the trekkers. Rainy season is the only season when you can think of avoiding visiting Barkana falls otherwise there is no reason not to visit and experience the awe-inspiring view of the falls.
The place is excellent for picnic and other adventure sport activities. The water current of the falls is high making it apt for rafting and rowing, river crossing and rock climbing adventures. Rock climbing is a little risky here since rocks are slippery but with guidance from professional rock climbers you are absolutely safe to enjoy your adrenaline rush.
The water falling from such a great height is a wonderful sight to watch. Down in the river people can take pleasure dips and even try a bit swimming. The joy in taking a luxurious bath in fresh and clear water is beyond words. One can experience the enthralling delight in Barkana falls. The food and other eatables are available in hotels nearby. For trekking make sure to carry enough food and water though natural water of the falls is in its purest form. It’s a fine place to have camp fire and overnight stay and until the rain god has some other plans, the stay can be quite awesome.
