The place has derived its name from three words. First is Kempu meaning red, second, Mannu meaning soil and lastly from Gundi meaning pit. Combining the three it means a place with red soil. This place was first owned by Krishnaraja Wodeyar. Then he later on went on to hand over the hills to the Karnataka Government.
