Cuisine of Udupi is not only famous in Karnataka but throughout India. Udupi cuisines (name taken from Udupi) have a strong influence of the south. You will only get pure vegetarian food i.e. no usage of garlic, onion, fish, meat, or shellfish. The dishes mainly consist of grains, beans, vegetables and fruits. The reason behind food being pure vegetarian is the tradition named “SATVIK”.

Dishes of Udupi are simply incomplete without coconut and coconut oil. The mouthwatering sambar is made with pumpkins and gourds as basic ingredients, blended with easily available species which add flavor to the cuisine.

If you are Dosa lover then you are at perfect place because Udupi is the place of origin of Masala Dosa. Jackfruits, Colocasia leaves, raw green bananas, red chilies and salt are available at the market in abundance. Udupi has a lot in store for women; sarees & mango pickles being the hot favorites. Tambuli or watery vegetable paste (generally made up of leafy vegetables)

Dry curry of Udupi is just amazing. In local language it is known as Tallu, Aiethna, Ajadina.
Bakshya is a dessert. After eating heavy spicy food you definitely need something really sweet to tone down your taste buds. Kheer is the best option.

The dishes are served on leaves and every dish has its fixed place on the leaf. The leaf is kept on the ground in the sequence wise. The leaf is called as Plantain leaf. Strict rules are followed while eating a meal i.e. no one can move before eating the full meal and the meal is started by saying name of lord Vishnu (Govinda).
